Martin O’Malley’s eight-day economic development mission moved to Israel on Tuesday, it was formally announced that four Israeli technology companies have agreed to open offices in Maryland. The O’Malley administration said in a statement that Shekel Scales opened an office in Owings Mills earlier this year. Three other firms — Askimo, Roboteam and Hybrid Security — all have plans to set up shop in Maryland. O’Malley touted the companies’ Maryland commitments as a “testament to our highly educated workforce and strategic location.” Shekel Scales, which builds electronic scales for the retail and health care industries, plans on hiring 30 people for its office in Owings Mills to assist its customers, which range from GE Healthcare to Fujitsu. Askimo, an online education startup, had previously announced its intention to move to Maryland.
Gov. Martin O’Malley and an entourage of Jewish and other thought-leaders will board a plane on April 20 and head to the Holy Land. This is the governor’s second mission. The trip is being called a “trade mission,” a trip put on by the Maryland/Israel Development Center with the support of the Baltimore Jewish Council. The purpose of the mission, according to MIDC’s chairman, Abba David Poliakoff, is to explore — and in some cases, solidify — economic development opportunities for Maryland with Israeli businesses and institutions. “As our economy strengthens, we know we must look beyond our borders for new avenues for trade and investment, particularly those countries, like Israel, that have invested heavily in supporting entrepreneurs and growing an innovation economy,” said Gov. O’Malley. Poliakoff said there are talks happening with a number of Israeli companies interested in setting up satellite offices in Maryland. In an article published on the MIDC website, three such companies are named: Hybrid Security, Robo-Team and Askimo. Hybrid Security has a cyber-security product named Telepath that monitors the behavioral aspects of all Web application users, inside and outside the organization. Robo-Team has created a family of robotic hardware and software solutions designated for [...]

The Daily Record 7:11 pm Mon, April 1, 2013 Posted: 7:11 pm Mon, April 1, 2013 By Jay Perman, Wallace Loh and Brit Kirwan The Daily Record Maryland researchers dream about the possibilities of personalized medicine — using advanced technology to customize treatments for individual patients. Developing the treatments will take a broad mix of engineering, computer science, medical and biological expertise. The first critical step involves assembling this scientific dream team. One year ago, the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, with the guidance of the Maryland General Assembly, committed to building that future by doing more with Maryland’s impressive research arsenal. We have come much further than we dreamed on that wintry March day and have made solid gains for the state. We are Maryland’s two largest public research universities. Over the past year, we created “MPowering the State” — the framework for a new educational, research and entrepreneurial collaboration between the University of Maryland campuses in College Park and Baltimore. Our collaborative power, for example, comes from pairing College Park’s excellence in engineering and computer science with Baltimore’s in biomedicine and medical imaging. By mining genetic data, researchers seek to develop a range of personalized treatments, [...]

April 9, 2013 By Jenny Hottie / The Diamondback While university President Wallace Loh advocated for a merger between this university and the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the Board of Regents entered into a “strategic alliance” between the two institutions. In hindsight, collaborating with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, made perfect sense to university President Wallace Loh. When engineers at this university learned of a Baltimore neurosurgeon’s struggle to operate on sensitive parts of the brain, they designed a tiny robot to maneuver around more precisely than instruments held by a human hand during surgery — something Loh said never would have happened if the neurosurgeon and robotic engineers had not met. Now, one year into the partnership, the universities have launched a collaborative public health school, developed a joint biomedical informatics and bioimaging center and created a research and innovation program. “When you have a formal structure for a partnership and encourage people to talk to each other, this is what the partnership between the universities is all about,” Loh said. “They have the problems; we have the solutions.” State officials first proposed the University System of Maryland study a potential merger between this university and UMB in March [...]
